Viluppuram (also Villupuram and
Vizhupuram) is one of the thirty districts which make up Tamil Nadu
State situated on the southern tip of India. The district headquarters
are located at Viluppuram. Viluppuram district came into existence on 30
September 1993 when it was created out of South Arcot district.
Viluppuram is the second largest district in the state.
It serves as the headquarters of Viluppuram District, the second largest
district in the State. National Highway No. 45, from Chennai to
Tiruchirapalli, goes through the city. Viluppuram also has a major train
station. The city's main source of income is agriculture. Its literacy
rate was low until the early 1980s, but has since improved constantly
and is currently about 75%. |
