Reiki is a Japanese word meaning "Universal Life Energy". Reiki is a method of activating and balancing the life force energy (also known as ki, prana, and chi) present in all living things. Light hand placement techniques are used on the body to channel this energy to organs and glands and align the energy centers in our body. It was re-discovered by Mikao Usui in the early 1900's and brought to the United States in the 1930's. Reiki is a very simple yet powerful technique that can be easily learned by anyone.

Reiki works on the principle that any physical disease has a metaphysical cause. Thus the Reiki removes the root cause of the diesase.
The laying of hands is used in Reiki therapy also as in spiritual healing. There is a difference though. In spiritual healing, a person with a strong energy field places his or her hands above a particular part of the recipient's body in order to release energy into it. So, here the healer is the one who is sending out the energy. In Reiki, however, the healer places the hands above the recipient; however, it is the recipient that draws the energy as needed. Thus, in this case, the individual being healed takes an active part in the healing process as opposed to having a passive part in spiritual healing. The individual takes responsibility for his or her healing. The recipient identifies the needs and cater to them by drawing energy as needed.
Reiki treatments usually last an hour and are conducted fully clothed, either in a seated position or lying on a massage table. The practitioner places their hands in various positions around your head and body. The energy flows through you, promoting a feeling of peace and well being.
How Reiki works:
A Reiki healing treatment is simple to perform. The practitioner is taught hand positions in which they place his/her hands above the person's energy centers, with the intent that healing occur, the energy then begins flowing, accelerating the bodies own natural healing ability. The energy has an intelligence of its own and knows where the healing energy has to go and what is needed. It never does any harm. The Reiki practitioner is a channel for the healing energy.
Each Reiki healing treatment is unique and deeply relaxing. All will have a different experience during a treatment. Some will feel heat, tingling or maybe nothing at all, the energy is working even though we maybe not be aware of it.
Reiki promotes deep relaxation and releases blockages within the physical, mental, emotional bodies. Release of tension and blockages then allow the natural flow of energy threw the body, releasing toxins and waste products as the blockages leave. Once the blockages are removed the person can then receive, hold and store more energy in the body, accelerating one's energy vibration.
Reiki healing usually brings about slow, gradual improvements over a period of days and weeks. With conditions that have been present a long time, it may take months until maximum benefits are achieved. While occasional healing "miraculous" cures have been reported, these are relatively rare.
