Meditation - The key to heal and transform your inner self.

Meditation, religious discipline in which the mind is focused on a single point of reference. It may be a means of invoking divine grace, as in the contemplation by Christian mystics of a spiritual theme, question, or problem; or it may be a means of attaining conscious union with the divine, e.g., through visualization of a deity or inward repetition of a prayer or mantra (sacred sound). Some forms of meditation involve putting the body in a special position, such as the seated, cross-legged lotus position, and using special breathing practices. Employed since ancient times in various forms by all religions, the practice gained greater notice in the postwar United States as interest in Zen Buddhism rose. In the 1960s and 70s the Indian Maharishi Mahesh Yogi popularized a mantra system known as Transcendental Meditation. Meditation is now used by many nonreligious adherents as a method of stress reduction; it is known to lessen levels of cortisol, a hormone released in response to stress. The practice has been shown to enhance recuperation and improve the body's resistance to disease.

Meditation is the practice of focusing the mind, often formalized into a specific routine. Meditation is usually recognized as a component of Eastern religions, originating in Vedic Hinduism, but it also developed independently in Sufism. It encompasses any of a wide variety of spiritual practices which emphasize mental activity or quiescence. Meditation can also be used for personal development in a non-religious context, such as the exercises of Hatha yoga.

Purpose of meditation:

The purposes for which people meditate vary almost as widely as practices. Meditation may serve simply as a means of relaxation from a busy daily routine; as a technique for cultivating mental discipline; or as a means of gaining insight into the nature of reality, or of communing with one's God. Many report improved concentration, awareness, self-discipline and equanimity through meditation.

Effects of meditation:

-Greater faith in, or understanding of, one's religion or beliefs

- An increase in patience, compassion, and other virtues and morals or the understanding of them

- Feelings of calm or peace, and/or moments of great joy

- Consciousness of sin, temptation, and remorse, and a spirit of contrition.

- Sensitivity to certain forms of lighting, such as fluorescent lights or computer screens, and sometimes heightened sense-perception.

- Surfacing of buried memories, possibly including memories of previous lives and those of others, or that of those to come

- Experience of spiritual phenomena such as kundalini, extra-sensory perception, or visions of deities, saints, demons, etc.

- Miraculous abilities such as levitation

The use of a mantra:

The mind in its moving is compared to a wind blowing. It is impossible so just catch the wind. Like so, it is almost impossible to stop the mind from thinking. Some practice meditation that is meant for getting the mind to a complete stop. To get the mind to be completely clear. But since it’s the nature of the mind, and of the self for that matter, to always be in action, it is an easier way of meditation to concentrate the mind on a certain object. Just as a thousand objects are seducing the mind away to the wrong path, so can one spiritual object of thinking keep the mind away from external seductions and concentrating it on the right track.

A Mantra is usually a sacred word that represents the supreme. Usually it is a sound that represents the name of God in its meaning. It is not a sectarian, “religious” god, rather then a personal spiritual conception of the supreme. As shown by research, meditation on that supreme does wonders in keeping the practitioner relaxed and tolerant to outside stimulations. In this state, not only the mind reached the state of peace, but also it reaches the spiritual goal of self realization.

How to meditate:

Controlling Your Breath At no time during the practice of this technique should you make any effort to control the breath. Let it flow naturally. Gradually, you may notice that the pauses between the inhalation and exhalation are becoming longer. Enjoy these pauses, for they are a glimpse of the deep peace state of advanced meditation. As you grow very calm you may notice that the breath is becoming so shallow (or the pauses so prolonged) that it hardly seems necessary to breathe at all.

The amount of time you practice is entirely up to you but end your practice of the technique by taking a deep breath, and exhaling three times. Then, keeping your mind focused and your energy completely internalized and try to feel peace, love and joy within your self. Sit for at least five minutes enjoying the deeply relaxed state you are in.

If possible, set aside an area that is used only to meditate. This will create a meditative mood. A small room or closet is ideal as long as it can be well ventilated. Your area can be kept very simple—all you really need is a chair or small cushion to sit on.

There are many ways of sitting that are equally good. You can sit either in a straight-backed chair or on the floor in any of several poses. Two things, however, are essential: Your spine must be straight, and you must be able to relax completely.

Focus your attention at the point between the eyebrows. This area, called "the spiritual eye," is a center of great spiritual energy. Your eyes should be closed and held steady, and looking slightly upwards, as if looking at a point about an arm's length away and level with the top of your head.
